Bay Area Hospital Cancer Center Earns National Accreditation
COOS BAY – Bay Area Hospital’s cancer treatment program recently received a renewed accreditation from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.
The accreditation report includes four commendations for the hospital’s performance on specific accreditation standards. The hospital is accredited as a “Community Cancer Center,” a distinction given to community hospitals that maintain excellence in comprehensive, patient-centered care. Hospitals must meet 34 quality care standards to qualify.
As an accredited cancer center, Bay Area Hospital takes a multidisciplinary approach, with consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists.
“We are extremely proud of our cancer care program,” said hospital CEO Paul Janke. “The quality of this program allows local cancer patients to receive excellent care without traveling to a big-city hospital. That’s a huge benefit in terms of cost, convenience, and the physical demands placed on the patient.”
The hospital received commendations related to:
- Its participation in clinical trials – research projects evaluating new cancer treatments.
- The staff of Bay Area Hospital’s cancer registry, which contributes to a nationwide database used for quality improvement throughout the country.
- Public reporting of treatment outcomes.
- The percentage of chemotherapy nurses holding national certification.
Established in 1922 by the American College of Surgeons, the Committee on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations that combine to set standards, and to perform research, education, and monitoring of care.
