Helping you get heart-healthy

If you’ve had recent heart problems, you probably have a lot of questions. What should I eat? Is it OK to exercise? How much exercise is too much? Can I go back to work?
Our Cardiac Rehabilitation team of medical professionals will help you get back on the road to recovery and teach you how to live a heart-healthy lifestyle.
Our goal is to help you to return to the activities you enjoy and lower your risk of a future heart attack or surgery. We’ll teach you to manage a heart-healthy lifestyle.
What to expect
Cardiac Rehabilitation at Bay Area Hospital includes:
  • Monitored physical activity
  • Education sessions related to heart health and lifestyle risks
  • Dietary consultation
  • Emotional support
When you enroll in the program, you’ll start with one-on one interviews with a nurse and a dietician. They’ll help you set goals for yourself and then create an individualized plan for you. Your family is encouraged to be involved as you regain control of your health and your life.
Up to three times a week, you’ll visit the center for educational classes, consultation, and exercise. You’ll pursue your personal goals – whether you want to feel less pain, reduce your medications, stop smoking, change your weight, or just get stronger.
You’ll participate in walking and balance training while learning guidelines for safe exercise. Exertion gradually increases, using the Rating of Perceived Exertion Scale. You’re encouraged to work “fairly light to somewhat hard” as you build a safe home exercise program.  In some cases, clients may be referred to social services, diabetic educators, and heart failure nurses.
After eight to 12 weeks of this personalized help, you’ll graduate to a self-monitored program of diet, home exercise, and other lifestyle changes. Bottom line: You’ll learn how to be successful. You’ll regain your strength and confidence to get back into life.
