MENTAL HEALTH AND PSYCHIATRIC OUTPATIENT CLINIC

Bay Area Hospital is the only acute inpatient mental health provider on the South Coast. After one state mental hospital closed in the mid-90s, serving the mentally ill was mandated to local communities. BAH is one piece of the community-based services. It has grown regionally to cover Coos, Curry, and Douglas counties.

The hospital's newly remodeled Mental Health Unit is roomier and more comfortable. Even with newly added advanced electronics for security and communications, a sense of community prevails among staff and patients. The staff strives to create a haven of safety for patients.

Treatment aspects include individual, group, and family counseling, art, music, and movement therapy, relaxation, and medication management. The Unit's philosophy is to treat the whole person and not just the illness to reconnect them to the world.

A recently opened psychiatric outpatient clinic provides geriatric and general psychiatric services. Two physicians provide outpatient services to the Mental Health Unit and rotate hospital call with other local psychiatrists. They work closely with family practice and internal medicine physicians to provide a collaborative treatment approach. Patients are greeted by a welcoming staff in a serene and restful lobby with paintings by a local artist.
